Elenagt19 > With the help of bungee cords sent from Stewartstown (bought at Home Depot) Valeria can spend valuable time on her feet.
Elenagt19 > The elastic cords allow her to experiment with shifting her weight. This is something not possible with her old backboard.
Elenagt19 > This photo was taken Oct 9 2006 of Valeria's work at Euromed. This was posted the next day. Her progress is very good. Note that the rubber feet of the crutches are not depressed into the carpet. Her weight is on her feet! She is being guided by a single finger pressed to her hips. Also notice the bands attached to the eyelets on the shoes. These shoes were bought at WalMart in Shrewsbury, PA and modified with the eyelets at Euromed. We bought them slightly oversized to accomodate the yellow plastic orthotics that were part of Valeria's leg braces made at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore.

Elenagt19 > Valeria can't read. She had never been to school until coming to the U.S. in March of 2006 when she was enrolled at Fawn Area Elementary School. She had had occasional tutors in Belarus as I could afford them but no consistent schooling as it was not available. Part of her difficulty is her vision problems. Nevertheless she loves stories and books with pictures. It is hard to believe but when shown a colorful childrens' book and reading it to her once or twice she will memorize the story and remember which pages (by pictures) the parts of the story come from. Here she recites from memory a story read to her the night before from a new book about a baby bird looking for its mother. I often can hear her voice coming from her room at night repeating parts of stories I read to her that day. My husband didn't believe this until he saw it himself.

Elenagt19 > A central theme that is hard to miss about the Euromed approach in using the Adeli suit and the cage and multiple therapists is that there are many, many forces acting on the patient's body simultaneously as they pass through therapy. This is just like the many forces that normally controlled postural muscles would exert. This is entirely different from American Physical therapy which seems to concentrate on a single muscle group and/or joint at a time one after the other in a linear fashion.
Elenagt19 > A large part of postural strength involves dealing with unstable surfaces. Valeria is started in a crawl position on this sideways rocker platform. She then goes to kneeling and eventually to standing.
